Regional Integration in the Middle East and North Africa
English Summary
The book "Regional Integration in the Middle East and North Africa: The Agadir Agreement and the Political Economy of Trade and Peace," authored by Dr. Tarik Oumazzane, evaluates the impact of the Agadir Agreement (signed by Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, and Jordan) on regional stability. Grounded in Commercial Institutional Peace (CIP) theory, the research examines two main hypotheses: that trade liberalisation deepens economic interdependence and that this interdependence fosters political cooperation and peace. Through a detailed analysis of trade data and political variables from 1990 to 2016, the author finds that while trade volumes between members have increased significantly, they remain marginal in the context of their total global trade. Politically, the book highlights a positive correlation between the agreement and increased cooperation in UN peacekeeping missions, suggesting that while economic integration is incomplete, the agreement has successfully enhanced diplomatic trust among these MENA states.
