Islamization of Knowledge General Principles and Work Plan
English Abstract
Islamization of Knowledge: General Principles and Work Plan, by Dr. Ismail Raji al-Faruqi and Dr. Abdul Hamid Abu Sulayman, is a foundational work in contemporary Islamic thought that presents both the theoretical foundations and the practical framework for the project of Islamizing knowledge. The authors argue that the intellectual and civilizational crisis of the Muslim world largely stems from the separation between modern academic disciplines and the Islamic worldview. They contend that educational systems in many Muslim societies have adopted Western paradigms that disconnect knowledge from faith, ethics, and the broader objectives of Islamic civilization.
The book critiques the division between religious and secular sciences and advocates the reconstruction of the humanities and social sciences upon the principles of Tawhid (the unity of God), Islamic ethics, and the objectives of Shariah. Rather than rejecting modern scientific achievements, the authors propose a critical evaluation, refinement, and integration of contemporary knowledge within an Islamic epistemological framework.
To achieve this goal, the book outlines a comprehensive work plan that includes mastering both the Islamic intellectual heritage and modern disciplines, critically assessing each tradition, synthesizing their strengths, producing new bodies of knowledge, and developing educational curricula consistent with an Islamic worldview. As one of the seminal publications of the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), this work has significantly influenced debates on Islamic education, philosophy of science, curriculum development, and the renewal of intellectual traditions in the Muslim world. It remains an essential reference for scholars of Islamic studies, education, and the humanities.
