Elements of Structural Equation Models (SEMs)
English Abstract
Elements of Structural Equation Models (SEMs) provides a comprehensive introduction to the theoretical foundations, methodological principles, and practical applications of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Designed for graduate students, researchers, and data analysts, the book presents SEM as one of the most powerful statistical techniques for examining complex relationships among observed and latent variables across disciplines such as education, psychology, management, sociology, economics, health sciences, and other social and behavioral sciences.
The book systematically explains the core concepts of SEM, including observed and latent variables, measurement and structural models, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), model identification, parameter estimation, model specification, goodness-of-fit indices, construct reliability and validity, and the interpretation of path coefficients. It also discusses model evaluation, model modification, hypothesis testing, mediation and indirect effects, and the comparison of competing theoretical models using established statistical criteria.
In addition, the text addresses important methodological issues such as model assumptions, missing data, multivariate normality, sample size requirements, multigroup analysis, measurement invariance, and advanced estimation techniques. Practical examples, conceptual diagrams, and empirical case studies demonstrate how SEM can be applied to answer complex research questions and validate theoretical frameworks. The book also introduces widely used SEM software packages, including AMOS, LISREL, Mplus, and SmartPLS, illustrating their role in model estimation and interpretation.
Serving as both a foundational textbook and a practical reference, this volume is particularly valuable for graduate students, academics, and professionals seeking to apply Structural Equation Modeling in quantitative research. By integrating statistical theory with applied methodology, it equips readers with the knowledge and analytical skills required to develop, test, and interpret sophisticated causal models and to conduct rigorous empirical research using contemporary SEM techniques.
