Monte Carlo Simulation Power Analysis Using Mplus and R
Monte Carlo Simulation Power Analysis Using Mplus and R
English Abstract
Monte Carlo Simulation Power Analysis Using Mplus and R by James Peugh and Kaylee Litson is a comprehensive guide to conducting statistical power analysis through Monte Carlo simulation using Mplus and R. The book addresses the growing need for simulation-based power analysis in modern quantitative research, where traditional analytical formulas are often inadequate for evaluating complex statistical models. It equips researchers with practical tools for determining appropriate sample sizes and optimizing study designs before data collection.
The authors begin by introducing the fundamental concepts of statistical power, effect size, Type I and Type II errors, significance levels, sample size determination, and research design. They then explain the principles of Monte Carlo simulation, demonstrating how synthetic datasets generated under specified population parameters can be used to evaluate the performance of statistical models under varying research conditions. This simulation-based approach is particularly valuable for sophisticated analytical frameworks such as Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), multilevel models, latent growth curve models, mediation and moderation analyses, and other latent variable techniques.
A major emphasis of the book is hands-on implementation. Through detailed examples and reproducible code, readers learn how to design Monte Carlo studies, generate simulated data, estimate statistical models, evaluate convergence, assess parameter bias, examine confidence interval coverage, estimate statistical power, determine appropriate numbers of simulation replications, and interpret simulation results using both Mplus and the R programming environment. Practical guidance is also provided for handling missing data, evaluating estimation accuracy, and reporting simulation findings in academic research.
By integrating methodological theory with applied statistical programming, the book enables readers to perform rigorous simulation-based power analyses for complex research designs. It serves as an essential resource for graduate students, quantitative researchers, statisticians, psychologists, educational researchers, social scientists, health researchers, and other professionals seeking to improve the methodological quality and statistical validity of empirical studies through advanced simulation techniques.
